CRUISE SHIP TERMINAL THREAT RETURNS TO BOTANY BAY

The push for a third cruise terminal in New South Wales is back on the agenda, with Botany Bay once again being considered as a potential site. A new panel has been assembled to identify a preferred location for the terminal, and unfortunately, the community’s voice is being left out—just like before.

According to the Jo Haylen, Minister for Transport of New South Wales, “NSW’s next permanent cruise terminal will be a massive new piece of infrastructure, and we have to get it right. That’s why we’ve assembled the best people to find the best location, so we can grow our cruise industry long into the future.” However, this panel is dominated by representatives from the cruise industry and NSW Ports, with no representation from the community or traditional owners. Here are the individuals who are tasked with making this decision:

  • John McKenna, Chief Customer and Commercial Officer, Port Authority of NSW
  • Margy Osmond, CEO, Tourism and Transport Forum
  • Marika Calfas, CEO, NSW Ports
  • Gavin Smith, Vice President and Managing Director, Royal Caribbean International Australia and New Zealand
  • Peter Little, Interim Leader, P&O Cruises Australia and Carnival Australia
  • Jill Abel, CEO, Australian Cruise Association
  • Sarina Bratton, Chair, Asia-Pacific, Ponant
  • Joel Katz, Managing Director, Cruise Lines International Association Australasia
  • Antony Ritch, CEO, TFE Hotels
  • Ben Angell, Vice President and Managing Director, Norwegian Cruise Lines

Where is the Community Voice?
Once again, the people who will be most affected by this development are being sidelined, with no community or traditional owner representation on the panel. We need to ensure our voices are heard and that decision-makers are held accountable.

Stay Vigilant and Get Involved
We urge you to stay informed and report any developments suggesting Botany Bay sites are under consideration—including Port Botany, Molineaux Point, Yarra Bay, or Frenchman’s Beach. Join the conversation and share any concrete information with us via our Facebook group Save Yarra Bay or email us at stbcoalition@gmail.com.

Together, We Can Fight Back Again!
Save the Bay is writing to the Transport Minister to restate our opposition  to a cruise terminal in Botany Bay and to insist on greater transparency and consultation with all stakeholders that will be impacted. We’ve won this battle before, and we can do it again. Let’s stand united and show that our community’s voice will not be ignored.

  1. Just 4 weeks ago Michael Daly, Member for Maroubra, stated at the Yarra Bay Sailing Club’s A G M, that whilst Labor was in Government there would NOT be a cruise terminal at Yarra Bay, so what is going on?!

  2. After reading the aforementioned I am totally perplexed with make up of the cruise selection panel. The community affected by any decision has no say or representation. Now it looks like the Government of the day, the government we thought would look after our future is telling us the fight back on. “Hello” is our government now backing down on their promise. We have one Government that can give us a $3.2 billion light rail we did not want or need , a football stadium that still holds the same amount of people as the old stadium held with a few cosmetic changes now the new government can’t stand up a make a call on a promise they made……NO CRUISE TERMINAL

  3. All non built up areas should be under the auspices of National Parks, thus protecting any future risk of damage to the environment within Botany Bay

  4. Many locals are opposed to this project. It is beautiful part of SIDNEY which will be marred for ever and no benefits for local residents. There are alternative options, like Port KEMBLA,
